Left Crescent Moon

left-CrescentMOON

For those of you who haven’t been keeping an eye on the night sky for a while, and wonder how you can tell if that moon up there is waxing or waning… here’s a little rhyme I made up to help me remember.

left crescent moon waxing soon to full moon bright
then wanes the light to crescent right
and dark moon night brings opportune
unhindered sight of heavens
strewn with starry light

or if that is too long for your mnemonic… just remember half of it:

left crescent moon waxing soon to full moon bright
then wanes the light to crescent right and dark moon night

Please note. This is written for those of us who live in the southern hemisphere. You Northern folk will have to make up your own rhyme, as the moon waxes and wanes round the other way on your side of the planet.
